Last night’s State of the Union message set the domestic agenda for the rest of this election cycle
- Democracy vs autocracy
- Good jobs vs outsourcing and automation
- Lower drug prices vs Big Pharma
- Fair taxes vs billionaires
- Better wages and the right to organize vs corporate greed
Texas AFL-CIO President Rick Levy set a precedent by attending. Autoworkers President Shawn Fain was on the nation’s television sets over and over because he was seated one row below the First Lady. Then the President of the United States actually hailed him during the speech. Fain stood up with a big grin and a fist salute!
Organizing opportunities continue to look good as the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced 275,000 new jobs in February. Unemployment rose slightly, but has now stayed below 4% for 39 continuous months! Wages and overtime hours continued to rise. Dallas City Workers, who had announced that they might picket a workplace, are now making progress with labor-friendly City Councilpersons.
Retirees Applaud (some) Congresspersons
The Alliance for Retired Americans has posted its report of congressional votes in 2023. On the 10 most important retiree issues, Congresspersons Allred, Crockett, and Veasey scored 100%, just as they did on last week’s AFL-CIO report card. Veasey’s staff will accept his “Hero Award” at 11AM Thursday, March 14, at 2218 E Main in Grand Prairie.
The big majority, but not all, of Dallas labor’s endorsed candidates won or made it into runoffs on March 5. Election results are on our web site. Labor has big opportunities, but it’s going to take some work. Contact jtomlinson.dallasaflcio@gmail.com to see how you can help.
