Even while we are faced with a government shutdown and a calamitous collapse of civil liberties in Texas, union activists and our friends continue working toward a better world. The way forward is a strong movement favoring working families, and we are winning that fight.
We’re Getting Payoffs
Here are some of the things we discussed at the March 21 Central Labor Council meeting:
- Ground Crews in Transport Union Local 555 at Southwest Airlines have (finally) ratified a new contract.
- Flight attendants in Transport Union Local 556 have a tentative contract.
- Starbucks has finally agreed to a framework for contract negotiations
- Teamsters at Molson-Coors in Fort Worth held a mighty rally that included supporters who are not members of Local 997. Their boycott is growing.
- Dallas AFL-CIO arranged for around 120 Autoworkers to work enthusiastically at our North Texas Food Bank. Texas AFL-CIO sent a group from Austin.
- Successful organizing drives and contract negotiations are reported every day.
- Autoworkers President Shawn Fain joined Senator Bernie Sanders in demanding a 32-hour workweek with no cut in pay.
Our council will continue promoting solidarity and organizing activities such as the celebration of International Workers Day.
Political Fight Continues
Most of labor’s endorsed candidates have already won their primary battles, but the Central Labor Council made some adjustments on March 22. First and foremost was to endorse Julie Johnson for Congressional District 32. We also recommended John Love in CD6, Sam Eppler in CD24, and Elizabeth Ginsberg in Texas 108. Everybody has a choice: they can join us in building the long-lasting movement for working families while promoting good candidates, they can do some other kind of electoral work for short-term benefits, or they can do nothing and let someone else control their destinies.
